A great community service has started up again on campus. Open Gym is a seven-week community service program that meets in the Lower School Gym on Sunday afternoons. Student volunteers are paired with an autistic “buddy” to play basketball, soccer, football, run around the track, and various other games and exercises. Despite the unusually frigid and gray start to the spring season, members of Open Gym have kicked off the season with optimism and hard work. Student volunteers and their buddies have willingly embraced the cold with warm clothing and smiling faces as they go outside for exercise. While many upperclassmen are veterans to the program, many students are new to Open Gym. These volunteers have quickly learned how to work with and understand their buddies so that they can help the children get exercise while having fun. With five more sessions left, Open Gym is excited for the rest of the season, no matter the weather.
